Back roads lead from the South Brent turn-off from the A38 to the Woodpecker Inn. The exterior of this 18th century building is very distinctive, with an overhanging tile-fronted storey above its porticoes entrance. The interior has some equally notable features, including modern brick pillars and a circular rough stone hearth.
In this atmospheric setting Christine and Robert Mitchell and their staff put the smiles on the faces of their many regular customers and visitors to the area with a fine choice of superb dishes on the printed menu and the several specials boards. Door wedge sandwiches provide substantial snacks, while typical main courses might be sea bass or Chicken supreme with cream cheese and grape, liver & bacon on a bed of rocket and spinach mash, delicious chicken curry and, for dessert, a luscious chocolate, rum and raisin terrine. News of the quality of the cooking has spread quickly, so booking is always advisable, particularly in the summer season.
